Reps push bill to return Nigeria to parliamentary govt

A group of lawmakers in Nigeria known as the House of Representatives have proposed a bill to change the countrys government system from presidential to parliamentary. This would mean that the head of government would be chosen from the majority party in the legislature rather than being directly elected by the people. The bill aims to address issues of political instability and corruption in the current presidential system. However the proposal has received criticism from some who believe it would concentrate too much power in the hands of a few individuals and potentially lead to a weaker executive branch.

  • 1) The house of representative is now pushing a bill to return Nigeria to a parliamentary system of government from it current presidential system of government. The parliamentary system of government means that the the head of government (executive) would be chosen from the majority party in the legislature rather than being elected by the people. Could this be a way to clamp on the will of people and take away their right to vote for their leader?
  • 2) As the house of representative is now pushing the bill to return the country back to parliamentary system of government, Nigerians now believes the senate also would follow suite in no time and there is higher chances the bill will get passed before the end of term of the current administration. What do you think the reason behind this sudden proposed switch from presidential to parliamentary system of government is?
  • 3) Many Nigerians are now deeply concern about the moves of this current administration from it way of running the government. From the alleged clamp down of oppositions, recent riot at the national assembly, the declaration of state of emergency in rivers state and the installation of a sole administrator in the state. Questions are now being asked if the country is on her way to military regime again and could this be the reason of the sudden push for change of presidential to parliamentary system of government?
