INEC picks holes in Natasha’s recal petition

The Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) has raised concerns about the petition filed by Natasha Akpoti challenging the outcome of the Kogi State governorship election. According to INEC the petition lacks merit and is full of inconsistencies. The commission also pointed out that the petitioner failed to provide evidence to support her claims of irregularities and violence during the election. INEC further stated that the petition was filed outside the stipulated time frame making it invalid. The commission urged the tribunal to dismiss the petition and uphold the victory of Governor Yahaya Bello. This development is a blow to Akpotis efforts to challenge the election results.

  • 1) INEC has yesterday rejected the petition filed against Senator Natasha's potential recall from the senate citing that the petition which accrued over two hundred and fifty thousand signatures does not include petitioners contact details, address, telephone numbers and emails as it must be provided according to the constitution. This has raised controversies that the petitions were gotten under false processes. Do you think the petitioners will be able to provide this information against the time frame given?
  • 2) Several videos have surfaced online following the controversial petition that was submitted to recall the erring senator and some petitioners have said that they were misguided and lured into giving their signatures. While the petition submitted yesterday did not meet the requirement of the constitution, many Nigerians have concluded that the exercise was conducted illegally and should not be entertained by INEC. Do you think there should be penalty for the perpetrators of this illegal act?
  • 3) While many Nigerians have faulted the process of the petition, some are saying it is the work of the opposition party and some stakeholders to frustrate the chances of the senator in pursuing justice. Praises have been trolling in for INEC for doing what is just and right in line with the constitution by rejecting the petition having failed to meet the requirement provided by rule of law. Will this act by the commission return the public trust in them in future elections?
