Telecom operators to begin direct airtime charges for USSD services from June 18 (Nairametrics)
Starting from June 18 2025 telecom operators in Nigeria will begin charging customers directly for USSD services. This decision was made by the Nigerian Communications Commission (NCC) in collaboration with the Central Bank of Nigeria (CBN) and the telecom operators. The move comes after a long-standing dispute between the telecom companies and financial institutions over who should bear the cost of USSD transactions. This new development means that customers will now have to pay for services such as airtime top-ups bill payments and other transactions made through USSD codes. This decision is expected to generate more revenue for the telecom companies and reduce the burden on financial institutions.

Discussion Points:
Responses- 1) From June 18, telcos will charge for USSD banking. Could this discourage people without smartphones from using it?
- 2) Many use USSD because it works without internet, Should banks or telcos have better informed users about the new charges?
- 3) Some say telcos are covering costs others call it bad timing. Is this fair or just more pressure on Nigerians?
- 4) With telcos now charging for USSD, Are banks risking losing customers, or will most people simply adjust?
