In June 2025 TechCabal reported that the Nigerian government was planning to launch a new database that would collect citizens personal information including their names and debts. The database was intended to help the government track and manage debtors but it raised concerns about privacy and data protection. Some experts pointed out that the database could be used for political purposes and could potentially violate citizens rights. Others argued that it could also help improve the countrys credit system and reduce fraud. The government defended the database stating that it would only be used for debt management and not for political gain.
