Child marriage in Northern Nigeria: Section 61 of Part I of the 1999 Constitution and the protection children against child marriage (Chapter 8 Vol 2) [2014] AHRLJ 24.

That guy needs to be arrested.

  • 2) He claims he loves her, though she’s too young to bear kids, Is this love or child exploitation?

This is very wrong in any way we want to put it. I mean this girl is a minor probably still under age 5. This is child exploitation and not love.

  • 3) The story has gone viral for the wrong reasons, Can public outrage stop child marriage, or is tougher legal action needed?

Unfortunately, that's what we see today. Wrong/bad news travels fast, compared to what people will really benefit from. Looks like the internet is doing more harm than good. The last time a young girl was forced to marry, she added rat poison to her husband's food. Guess what! She was arrested. Nigeria needs to start enforcing laws and not just making them.

  • 4) Seeing a man boast about marrying a child, What does that say about the values we’re promoting today?

it reflects a failure not only of individual judgement but also of the social and cultural systems that allow it to happen, let alone celebrate it. Child marriage is a violation of human rights.it strips away a child's chance of a full childhood, education, and often their health and safety.

This is a very common way in the north and we are not taking it seriously enough. Child marriage is very wrong and should not be allowed in any way or form. We are promoting a really bad culture.
